Dushanbe is the largest city in Tajikistan, its magnificent capital. This is the political, cultural and economic center of the country. Here, the squares breathe history, and ancient Fortresses and museums can tell about the life of civilizations that lived on the territory of the city thousands of years ago. Here you can see a monument to the hero of the Tajik people and the founder of the Somonid dynasty – Ismoil Somoni. In honor of Ismoil Somoni the Tajiks gave the name to their national currency (somoni) and renamed the highest peak of the Pamirs (since 1998, the peak of Communism has been called the peak of Ismoil Somoni).
Dushanbe is located at an altitude of 750-930 m above sea level within the densely populated Gissar Valley in southern Tajikistan. The city is one of the highest mountain capitals in the world. Literally one hundred meters from its border, mountains already begin.
Today, Dushanbe is a modern world capital, a large sunny city with developed infrastructure, which can be called a champion in the number of streets, avenues, squares named after poets and writers, which once again confirms the deep historical memory of Tajiks.
In recognition of the city’s outstanding contribution to strengthening the values of peace, tolerance and solidarity in everyday life, on August 4, 2004, by decision of UNESCO, Dushanbe awarded the First Prize “The City of the World” of the Asia-Pacific Region for 2003-2004.
