The fertile area of the lower Kofarnihon is an ancient agricultural region, part of the historical region of Balkh. In the Middle Ages, this area is known as Qabodiyon and one of the northern provinces of the Samanids, and later - the Ghaznavids. There were several rich cities in the valley, among them - Shahri-Tus. It has been mentioned since the 12th century. Later it belonged to the Bukhoro emirate, and at the end of the 19th century it came under the protectorate of Russia. In 1930, it became a district center.
