Dushanbe – The Heart of Tajikistan
Dushanbe is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Tajikistan, located in the picturesque Varzob River Valley at an altitude of about 800–850 meters above sea level. The city is surrounded by the mountains of the Gissar Range, which give it a special charm and fresh mountain air.
The first settlements on the territory of modern Dushanbe existed in ancient times as part of the Great Silk Road.
The name “Dushanbe” translates from Tajik as “Monday” — on this day, a large market was held here, attracting traders from different regions.
In 1924, Dushanbe became the administrative center of Tajikistan, and in 1929 it was granted the status of capital.
Since then, the city has developed rapidly, with wide avenues, parks, theaters, and cultural centers being built.
Today, Dushanbe is a dynamically developing city that combines Eastern charm with the features of a modern metropolis.
It is home to more than 1 million people.
The city is famous for its:
wide, tree-lined avenues;
modern buildings in harmony with Eastern architecture;
cozy parks, fountains, and squares;
rich museums and theaters.
Dusti Square — the city’s central square, featuring the monument of Ismaili Somoni, founder of the first Tajik statehood (9th–10th centuries). The monument is more than 40 meters high.
