Iskanderkul — The Pearl of the Fann Mountains

Iskanderkul is one of the most picturesque and famous lakes in Tajikistan, located on the northern slope of the Gissar Range in the Fann Mountains, at an altitude of about 2,195 meters above sea level. The lake has a triangular shape, covering an area of approximately 3.4 km², with a maximum depth of up to 72 meters.

The name is linked to the legend of Alexander the Great (Iskander Zul-Qarnain), who is believed to have stopped here during his campaign in Central Asia.

Nature and Climate

The lake is surrounded by majestic peaks rising to 4,000–5,000 meters, among them Mount Chimtarga (5,489 m) and Hazorchashma. The climate here is mountainous: summers are cool (average temperature +18…+23 °C), while winters are cold and snowy.

Nearby are beautiful waterfalls, including the famous “Niagara of the Fann Mountains”, which drops from a height of about 38 meters, as well as rivers Saridakh, Hazormech, and Khanka, which feed the lake.

The lake is located 134 km north of Dushanbe, and the journey takes about 3–4 hours by car through the Anzob Pass (3,372 m). The route is scenic, passing through mountain gorges and tunnels.

Iskanderkul is not only a natural gem of Tajikistan but also a place of power associated with ancient legends. It is considered one of the country’s most important tourist attractions and a symbol of the Fann Mountains.
